Gary and his wife Fanny bought their ’06 Santa Fe from me in the summer of ’07. Gary really had his sights set on a new body style

Gary and his wife Fanny bought their ’06 Santa Fe from me in the summer of ’07. Gary really had his sights set on a new body style Santa Fe, but in the end he & Fanny went for a one year old beauty with under 19,000km on the clock, and saved themselves about $7000 to boot. When I moved from Hyundai back here, Gary was one of my first customers to come along, and he has been servicing here ever since. Gary is meticulous about maintenance & appearance with his Santa Fe. It is always spotlessly kept, and serviced to the letter. Fanny works in the apparel industry, and Gary has been retired from Toronto Fire Services since 2001. Mark and I love Fanny’s job! Every so often Gary shows up with a big bag of new shirts for Mark and I to split up. Did you hear that, folks, Gary & Fanny bring us gifts! All this despite the fact Mark and I needle him relentlessly every time he’s here. All in good fun of course. Gary & Fanny do a power walk every day at the mall, and they also enjoy trying different restaurants in the area. They have been doing renovations on their house for a couple of years. Thankfully, Gary says, the renos are just about done. I have established a long list of loyal customers over the years. With his wry sense of humour, and easy going manner, Gary is right at the top of my list of favourites.

Gary and his santa Fe. "If he took any better care of it he'd have to adopt it. Keep smilin' Gary!"

Our Best For The Holidays To All

Christmas Holly

Yes, it’s that time of year again, folks. The Holidays are upon us, and the New Year is just around the corner.

This is a time to reflect back on the events of the past year, and to look forward to good things down the road in 2010.

Highs for us in ’09: service department growth – thanks to all for your loyalty; strong growth in repeat & referral sales; receiving the Diamond award for Ajax/Pickering used car dealers & Gold award for motorcycle dealers; my son Aynsley’s avid interest in fishing & Anthony going to Durham College; Mark’s daughter Makenzie’s improvement as a goalie & son Christian’s growing musical talent; Mike’s son Harry getting closer to being a certified ski instructor & daughter Amelia’s continuing excellent work in school.

We want to hear your ’09 highlights. See the “back page” for more about this, and

Happy Holidays to all.

Our Best For The Holidays To All

How was 2009 for you and yours?

Drop us a line telling us about some of the good things that happened to you this year, and we’ll publish as many of them as we can in the February newsletter. In fact, if you think it’s a good idea, we might even publish a special January edition to list all the responses and have a little contest where you can vote for the top highlight of 2009! We would also post the contest on our website.

The highlights can be about you, a family member, a friend, your pet or anything or anyone else that made you feel good in ’09.

E-mail your highlights to tforde1961@yahoo.ca. Remember, if you think this is a good idea, you have to tell me. There would be a prize. Not an oil filter, not a new car, but somewhere in between. Perhaps two oil filters, perhaps a really crappy, really old car. Start typing folks!

Where Do We Go From Here?

Our goal for this newsletter as 2010 arrives is to make it what you tell us you want to see. We need your input to give you what you want. Your feedback is what shapes The Pickering Village News.

This is our fifth edition, and we think we’re getting better at this as we move along. What do you think? It takes me a total of about six to eight hours to compose each issue. I can handle that commitment of time comfortably since I have two months to do it, and I also happen to enjoy doing it, so if it means investing more time to give you the content you want, consider it done.

Send your comments, good and bad, folks. E-mail early, e-mail often.

Craig Pearson Update

"Craig and his lates baby"

"Craig and his lates baby"

Craig was our feature customer for October. You know, the guy who’s had 4 bikes and ridden over 20,000kms since taking up riding last spring. Well, he’s done it again. Craig has traded his Venox and moved up to a Hyosung GV650. Pretty soon we’re going to have to add to our bike lineup just to keep up with him. Keep on ridin’ Craig, we love ya!

Close Call For Lorraine From Oshawa

Lorraine bought her Elantra from me when I was with Hyundai. She loves her car and has been a loyal service customer with us for some time now.

Recently, Lorraine had an unfortunate meeting with a deer. While there was significant damage to the car, Lorraine was not seriously hurt, and that is the only thing that matters. Lorraine is one of the good ones.

Best wishes to Lorraine from everyone at PVM! We’re all happy that it was only the car that got hurt.

“Don’t worry, Lorraine, the body shop will fix your baby up good as new.”

…More About Timing Belts

In the August newsletter we talked about the importance of timing belt replacement.  Well, one of our very good customers, Leo from Scarborough, recently had a timing belt failure on his ’01 Sonata with 115,000km. This time, unlike Mark’s experience, there was damage to the pistons, so the failure was terminal. Unfortunately, because that engine has not been produced since ’01, we were unable to find a replacement with reasonable mileage for replacement that made financial sense. Now, a perfectly good, low mileage car is about to be scrapped!

All of this could have been avoided. We want to sell all of you lots of cars, but not under such circumstances. So, we will say it again – replace your timing belt as required. Not doing so could prove very costly. Leo replaced the Sonata with an ’04 Elantra. He also owns an ’06 Tucson, so he and wife Nora remain a loyal Hyundai family.
